Vintage Book Week

Some illustrations made for a recent Instagram illustration challenge #VintageBookWeek to re-imagine some vintage book covers. I took the titles ‘The Shy Little Kitten’ and ‘The New Golden Song Book’, and made my own covers.

These are the colour roughs I always produce to test out colour palettes for a final illustration… I liked some of the paler compositions but felt the turquoise gave the cover a boost for shelf appeal, and the white space behind the kitten some contrast so the character has impact when displayed as small-scale thumbnails too.

I love this piece of work so used it as my recent #KidLitArtPostcard design!

I reimagined the ‘Jack and Jill’ vintage book of a mid-century family sheltering under an umbrella as a children’s magazine cover.
