Monster Narrative

This little monster character appeared during a session on narrative with Benji Davies on my Pathways+ course. I then developed the idea of him pottering around in his little cottage garden into a few more narrative illustrations, which I then made into a concertina card thank-you mailer to send out to course contacts. I’m also developing a story for him, so if you’d like to hear more about that or see any dummy books please reach out.

I love working with vibrant colour  but wanted to keep a reduced palette, so these are done in only 3 overlaid colours, to give it a feel of printmaking. 

The monster started in my sketchbook as some rough ideas from my own reference photos of lovely gardens I’ve visited. And lots of scribbles about how to make the concertina work!

I explored the monster’s character further with this illustration with the brief ‘NO-vember’ for my agent’s monthly mailer, adding in lots of cosy details as he hibernates in his cottage.
